Initial support for the creation of an adaption of Henrik Ibsen's "The Lady from the Sea" has been provided by a NEFA National Dance Project Production Grant, awarded in fall, 2006. "The Lady from the Sea" will be performed alongside a mosaic of traditional flamenco vignettes common to a Noche Flamenca performance, providing audiences with contrasting performance examples (narrative and non-narrative) that will lead to a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the true range of the flamenco form.
"The Lady from the Sea" will premiere September 29, 2007 at CT College in New London, CT with subsequent performances on tour in October, February, and March, with an NDP touring subsidy associated with the awarded production grant. Confirmed venues include the Modesto's Gallo Center for the Arts, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, Napa Valley Opera House, Santa Clarita's College of the Canyons, Stanford Lively Arts, IL's McAninch Arts Center, MA's Williams College, San Luis Obispo's Cal Poly Arts, Boston's Emerson Theatre, Purdue University, Detroit's Music Hall, Louisville's Kentucky Center for the Arts, the Tampa Bay Performing Arts Center, the Virginia Arts Festival, Atlanta's Rialto Theatre, and the Cerritos Center in Southern California.
Concert presentations of the form of flamenco have become very popular in the performing arts of North America in recent years. In a market flooded with cheap imitations and watered down line-dancing, Noche Flamenca has maintained the authentic form of this ancient culture through Santangelo's master direction. Bessie-award winning Solédad Barrio will play the role of Ellida with a cast of two additional leads and live music. The music is composed by Miguel Perez and Emilio Florido and performed by three singers and two guitarists. By presenting "The Lady from the Sea", Noche will continue offering audiences a look into the rich culture of flamenco - providing the means to a deeper understanding of flamenco's roots in the persecution of the Moorish/Arab, Gypsy, and Sephardi Jewish peoples.
